Next to China, India is the second largest producer of silk in the world, and has a 12% share in the global raw silk production. While India produces around 18,475 MTs of raw silk annually (2006-07), the total annual consumption of silk in the country is around 26,000 MTs per annum. The export earning from silk is growing steadily because of increasing demand for Indian Silk goods, particularly from the USA and European countries.

Exports earning which was Rs. 2,294.05 crore during the year 2002-03, has increased to Rs. 3338.35 crore during the year 2006-07, showing an increase of around 46%. The India Silk Goods have high export potential because of their distinctiveness and low production cost. India, being a traditional sericultural country, holds a unique position in the world and has the distinction of producing all the commercial varieties of silk.
